Optimising surgical hubs for staff: Case studies on training, wellbeing and retention

Vanguard Healthcare Solutions is delighted to share a peer reviewed article by the British Journal of Healthcare Management, produced in collaboration with some of the UK’s most highly regarded healthcare professionals. The article explores the case for surgical hubs and their positive impact on the training, wellbeing and retention of staff.

Using relevant case studies from surgical hubs located across England, the article is divided into four clear sections:

  • The case for surgical hubs
  • Training in surgical hubs
  • Improving staff satisfaction and wellbeing
  • Final conclusions for surgical hubs

Surgical hubs have been widely endorsed by The Royal College of Surgeons England (RCSE) as an essential tool for combatting mounting pressures on elective care. In summer 2022, the RCSE released a report entitled ‘The case for surgical hubs’, followed by an accompanying webinar that further developed on the concept of surgical hubs and the benefits of creating dedicated zones for elective care, away from emergency care.

The British Journal of Healthcare Management article expands on the benefits of surgical hubs to wider areas of the healthcare system. With reference to relevant case studies of surgical hubs situated at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Wrightington Hospital, Croydon and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, the article includes first-hand accounts of experiences of staff working on the facilities, looking at the benefits of surgical hubs for staff training, wellbeing and retention.

Contributing authors include:

  • Tim Briggs, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, UK; Getting It Right First Time, UK
  • Professor Peter Kay, Wrightington Hospital, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, Lancashire, UK
  • Mary Fleming, Wrightington Hospital, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, Lancashire, UK
