Over five years, UHB and Vanguard established a surgical hub for
laparoscopic cholecystectomy, created a ‘green’, isolated facility to perform
elective surgery during the Covid-19 pandemic, reduced the elective backlog, and provided capacity while a new 6-theatre surgical hub was constructed.

• the first mobile theatre was set up and operational within weeks of the decision to proceed being taken
• a clinical team and equipment package was provided with each of the theatres, enabling the earliest opening and availability of increased capacity
• the flexibility of the Vanguard clinical team enabled the Trust to react to changing needs, completely repurposing the theatres
• the team integrated with their Trust colleagues, becoming thought of by Trust managers as simply part of their team
• many procedures of different specialities were performed with minimal changeover time.

Having performed well and supported the Health Board in bringing down the waiting times for endoscopy procedures for the local community of Ninewells, our mobile facility will shortly be removed from the site. Before that happens, we thought it would be useful for other healthcare providers to see the quality and discuss the merits of facilities like this, so that they are well informed for making short, medium or long-term plans for facility refurbishments or reducing waiting lists.

While this mobile is set up for endoscopy procedures, anyone considering establishing a surgical hub would also gain a valuable insight into what it’s like to work in a mobile theatre. Don’t be misled by the word ‘mobile’. Designed to be delivered and installed quickly, Vanguard’s mobile endoscopy procedure rooms and operating theatres are fully functioning, compliant theatres, and can be in place for years.
