FAQs

How long does it take to install a modular facility?

The short answer is less time that you might think. Modular facilities using Modern Methods of Construction can be developed far more quickly than traditional bricks and mortar buildings. As an example, from purchase order to handover, the construction of four modular day case operating theatres, recovery space and other support rooms at a hospital could take as little as 12 weeks or up 26 weeks if a bespoke Healthcare Space solution is required.

Can I rent or buy a facility?

The answer is yes to both. We offer a flexible procurement approach for our modular facilities with rental, rental/purchase, and purchase options available either directly, or through various frameworks.

Our mobile units are available for rental only, this allows us to be fleet of foot and respond to urgent needs with units regularly becoming available.

Is there a minimum rental period?

In general, there is a minimum 13-week rental period for our mobile facilities and we can construct a pricing model for our modular facilities from 26 weeks onwards. However, we adopt a flexible approach as our priority is always to base our solutions around our clients’ needs as opposed to imposing constraints.

What procedures can be carried out in a mobile operating theatre facility?

75% of all clinical procedure types carried out in a major acute hospital can be performed in our mobile operating theatres, from hip replacements to cataract surgery, endoscopy procedures to plastic surgery. Plus specialist cardiac surgery and complex cancer procedures. The complete list is far too long to include here, but you can find out more on our Heritage page.

What advantages do modular buildings offer over traditional healthcare buildings?

The main benefit is the speed they can arrive on-site and let the first patients through the door. MMC and off-site construction buildings are just as robust and high quality as traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ buildings, the big difference is that they can be built at the same time as the on-site substructure work is carried out.

Module design and MMC can cut construction times by up to 45%, reduce costs by 16% and increase productivity by 30% throughout the build process.1 There are environmental benefits too, with limited waste, and reduced carbon versus traditional build site deliveries.

As an example — St Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado found the off-site construction of their facilities shaved 72 days off the delivery time and reduced the cost by an estimated $4.3 million.2

Is planning permission needed to install a mobile facility?

Planning permission is sometimes needed for some mobile deliveries, it depends on the term length and the scope of the project. Don’t worry, we can help with this.

As you would expect, we have a wealth of experience in this area. Our project team can include a specialist planning consultant to support clients with the planning submission and approval process, this is often the case with our turnkey solutions. Our consultant will engage in pre-planning discussions with the relevant local authority to ensure their requirements are well understood, this minimises delays in planning permission being granted.

How do you manage your impact on the environment, particularly with your larger facilities?
As a provider to the NHS, we share the vision set out in the NHS Green Plan. Our solutions are designed, built, and delivered with great care and consideration for the environment, reducing carbon at every step of our manufacturing process. We constantly look for ways to minimise the impact of how we use resources with a particular focus on ensuring we contribute to the global agenda on climate change.

Our goal is to be net carbon zero for scope 1 & 2 emissions by the end of 2023, and for scope 3 by 2035; we have a robust Carbon Reduction Plan in place to help us achieve this. We’re proud of our progress on the journey towards carbon net zero, take a closer look here…

We recently partnered with Klimate to create a carbon removal strategy to help us achieve our net zero ambitions. The innovative portfolio of carbon removal projects includes projects such as direct air capture, deep storage bio-oil, ocean kelp, and restorative tree-planting. All are independently verified to ensure their integrity.

Do you work with partners?

Yes, we are always willing to investigate partnership opportunities and are currently working with equipment manufacturers, architects, construction, and clinical services operators.
