Our history

Vanguard Healthcare, the UK's leading provider of mobile surgery and endoscopy services to the NHS, became an independent company on 1 April 2009, following a Management Buy Out from Nuffield Health.

Vanguard became part of Nuffield Health (formerly Nuffield Hospitals) on 9 October 2004 - a pivotal moment in Nuffield's drive to work more closely with the NHS to provide flexible, lower-cost capacity as well as making independent healthcare more affordable and accessible to all.

Vanguard Healthcare, which also provides mobile wards and clinics, was originally part of Cardinal Healthcare. The first UK surgical procedures to be carried out on a mobile operating theatre were performed on a Cardinal unit on 4 April 2000, at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St. Edmunds.

Vanguard began trading as a separate entity in March 2002 with three mobiles and 12 members of staff. Today the company now employs 68 staff and has a fleet of 36 clinical mobile healthcare facilities located on hospital sites, GP surgeries and community sites in many parts of the UK and Ireland.

Our units operate, for the most part, on NHS sites and are used by NHS surgeons and anaesthetists for the benefit of NHS patients. We also help some providers in the independent sector to deliver healthcare solutions.

Our world-class surgical facilities - which are provided with or without clinical personnel according to local need - are built to UK Department of Health Technical Memorandum standards and cost about £1million each to put on the road.

In January 2004, we became the first company to supply the NHS with a Mobile Treatment Centre, by providing two integrated fleets of mobile operating theatres, recovery wards and outpatient facilities as part of the Department of Health's national initiative to deliver an additional 40,000 cataract operations.

On 20 November 2008, a clinical team from Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust delivered the 100,000th procedure on a Vanguard mobile clinical facility. A big achievement for Vanguard but also a key milestone for the NHS which is learning to use mobile services in an imaginative way, creating flexibility in how they deliver healthcare to patients.
